Mrs. Goodneedle's Bookshelf

I collect picture books for children, specifically quilt-themed children's books. I have a shelf full, but there's always room for more. This is the newest addition to my collection: Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria, a true story that will delight not only the children in your life, but the inner child in you. Well written by Kyra Hicks and warmly illustrated, this book presents the title character as a small girl born into slavery in Tennessee and follows her courageous and determined life to Liberia where her tenacious spirit continues to pursue a life-long goal. This is a story, as well as a history lesson, that will stay with you long after you've finished reading. Martha Ann is a hero, in every sense of that word. The book is sure to prompt lively conversation about life's true values; about not giving up, about coping with and triumphing over impossible heartache and loss. I'm making room for Martha Ann on my bookshelf. I look forward to sharing this book with friends and family. Look for it, share this review. It's a gem!

What a wonderful collection. I have run across only a few children's books with a quilting theme. I will have to keep my eye open for this one. It sounds so good. :)

I'm biased, as Kyra is my younger sister, however, I agree with your assessment of her second quilting book. All three of my children have their own autographed copy (smile)...

I love to collect children's books (ABC's of places we visit) The graphics are so wonderful and the stories are fun to share with every kid that comes for a visit - a great way to bond. Thanks for the review *s*

I've heard another blogger mention that book as well. I definitely will look for it. Have you seen the books by Anna Grossnickle Hines? she has a website as well. She makes wonderful quilts as illustrations for her book.

Do you have Valerie Flournoy's book that was featured on Reading Rainbow many (!) years ago? I do, and I love it more now than I did then!

My favorite course in college was a children's lit class ... still holds true!

Happy Easter to you and yours.

Looks like a lovely book. I'll keep a look out for it when I'm back in the States. I love quilting stories and they inspire me to leave more than just quilts behind.
