Forty Years From Now...

What will I be doing in 2048? Will I still be quilting? Oh, I do hope so! These two baby quilts came to me by way of a friend a few weeks ago. Nell still visits the nursing home where her mother lived for years until she passed away a few months ago. Many of the residents are like extended family to Nell; including one dear lady, a quilter, who is in her mid-nineties! She had hand quilted each and every motif in these precious panels but needed assistance with the binding, she doesn't have a sewing machine. My friend asked if I could help, I was honored. Nell's friend requested that I leave the hand work for her to complete, I was more than happy to comply! I stitched the bindings in place all the while marveling at her tiny stitches and admiring this lady's commitment. And so, I began to think... what will I be doing when I'm in my mid-nineties? Still quilting? God willing, I hope to be making baby quilts; happily preparing for the next generation!

That's sweet of you to help put the binding on. I too hope that you - and all of us - are still quilting 40 years from now.

How nice of you to do that for the lady. I hope to still be quilting in 40 years. I will be entering my 90's and 95 is my goal. Will I still be blogging? Most likely still quilting but I don't know about blogging.

Oh my your blog entry so touches my heart, very special to read and brought a smile to my face. I very much doubt that 40 years from now I will be quilting, but I truly hope my granddaughter will carry on the tradition. She is well on her way!

I have already warned my kids: If I ever need to live in assisted living/nursing home, purchase a sewing machine (non functioning is ok) and place a stack of fabrics near it. Shuffle fabric weekly! I will be a docile lady! Just knowing that sewing machine is nearby; JUST IN CASE! lolol I think I will start practicing my handquilting...I would like to follow in your friend's footsteps!

It is amazing that so many ladies in nursing homes quilt. My Aunt works in one, and when some of my grandmothers blocks needed finishing she had her ladies do it. I hope that if ever I live in one, I will still be able to do something useful that I enjoy. The quilts look lovely.

How neat! Wonderful for the babies, but a boon for the maker as well. Thank you for sharing this.

What a wonderful, heartwarming post. I too can't think of anything better than passing on the love that is expressed in a quilt to a new baby.
