In A Bind

I finished the hand work on binding three quilts while I was sitting in the car last week. Time well spent on the long drive from North Carolina to Iowa, and back! Typically, I will cut and prep the binding strips when I complete the sandwiching process and am ready for the quilting to begin. That way, I'm ready to attach the edge finish as soon as that last quilting stitch is history. If there's any leftover binding I add it to my ever-growing binding roll, this comes in handy for scrap quilts when any, or all, colors would do just fine. I especially love the look of a multicolor, pieced, binding on an all-over scrappy; it's one more place to be creative and have fun!

Pretty picture of the binding strips! Here's what I do with left-over binding strips: When I give a quilt, I don't try to put it in a box or a bag. I roll it up with the back facing out and the label (if there is one) showing. Then I use the binding left-overs to tie around the roll in two places with a floppy bow and then angle the ends of the bow streamers.

Thanks for the leftover binding ideas - I never know what to do with it!

I use some of my leftover binding lengths to finish Priority Quilts for AAQI, other were used on my journal quilts last year, and still others work for scrappy binding on newly finished full size quilts. One of these days, I plan to press the binding strips flat and use them to make a scrappy string quilt... I envy you being able to stitch in the car (it gives me a huge headache).

The binding roll is so pretty. I wrap my leftover binding around a clipboard to use on the next scrap quilt if there is a lot of it. Otherwise, I'll put it in the scrap bins to await usage in a string quilt.

Congrats on the 3 finishes. I just started attaching my scraps of binding. I can't wait to have a nice fat roll of binding like yours to use.

What a neat idea, I just throw mine in with the rest of the scraps, thinking someday......I will be productive. It's so good to be home. Hope to see you soon. Bobbin

What a great idea. I keep left over binding but it is in little bits and lengths. Just connect them all. Duh! I'm off to raid my binding bin.

I love the photo of the binding strips! Much prettier than the ziploc bags where I keep mine. Good for you, getting those bindings done. I have 3 quilts that need to be bound - would you like to do those too? Tee hee!
