A Warm Start

When our children were little I used to set up oatmeal to cook overnight; at that time my slow-cooker was the small-ish size with a non-removable crock, the hot cereal was always creamy and delicious when we awakened. I have tried to prepare the same in my new, larger, slow-cooker with dismal results. The oatmeal has turned out overcooked, and even after buttering the sides the cereal would adhere to the crock and required intense scrubbing, it just wasn't worth the effort. Both my daughter and son had asked about doing oatmeal overnight, they remembered enjoying it prepared that way when they lived at home. I shared my most recent unhappy attempts and my son inquired about a small slow-cooker, brilliant suggestion! I found two right before Christmas, and bought one for each of them. My daughter reported stellar results, creamy oatmeal "just like Mom used to make", with a super easy clean up! I went shopping this week and found one more, to keep here. Only 1.5 quarts, and with a "warm" setting, this one does yield perfect oatmeal for a warm start to a winter morning. If you want to give it a try, do make sure you butter the sides first; the proportions are three parts water to one part old-fashioned rolled oats, set for 8 hours on the WARM setting. It will be ready and waiting for you to enjoy when you wake up! Yum.

Never thought of this but will certainly try it. Have you tried rice pudding in the slow cooker? Delicious!

Can you pack it for our ski trip?

Mrs G, What type of oats do you use? Would you share the instructions on how you do it?
This sounds so wonderful, I love cooked oatmeal, as opposed to the quick stuff that I sometimes eat. I bought a tin of the pricey cut oats that I've never tried yet. Would those be a good one to try?
Thanks in advance!

What a good idea!

One of the best breakfasts at the Folk School is their homemade oatmeal with sides of their homemade granola, raisins, brown sugar, plain yogurt, and honey for topping options. Yummmmmm!

So glad you found a model that will do what you want!

Ok, for someone who isn't on "parts"; do you mean like three cups of water per one cup of oatmeal? And is it the regular oats not the quick cooking?

THanks!

What a cool thing you did and what a great Mom you are! I love the fact that this warm tummy tradition is about to be handed down to Mason. :)

I don't thing I would be able to sleep because I sure I would be smelling it. I love oatmeal. I make the steel cuts oats and add dried cranberries, cut up apples, almonds, and flax seed meal. Yummy!
