WILDflowers?

By definition a wildflower is just that, wild; a flower growing uncultivated in it's natural space.
The state of North Carolina has in place a State Wildflower Program to beautify the interstate highways. The flowers bloom all spring and summer and make the drive a pretty one, wherever you're traveling to or from. The Program is funded with revenue collected from the sale of personalized license plates. This is all good, don't get me wrong, but I have a question: if they're planted, en masse, along I-40 are they still wildflowers? Just wondering...

The other question I have is why do they have to put signs up in the middle of the wildflowers that say "Enhancement" (do we really have to be told that?) and how much do those signs cost????

I hear Kyle is located in the State with some proud wildflowers as well. Perhaps a drive is in order?

Maybe "wild" isn't being used to mean uncultivated, maybe it's being used as in "wild and crazy"!! ;-) Either way, it's really pretty.

Good question. I just think they are pretty! We have the same thing here in my home state! Have a good day!

maybe they don't know exactly what they are planting...
or maybe they don't know how many they are planting
or maybe they have big huge wild parties....
all of which would make them wild, right??

We just finished a 3 week, 5,000 mile RV trip and intersected North Carolina twice. We noticed all the gorgeous flowers! The ones that surprised us were the daylilies. They're definitely not wildflowers. They have to be intentionally planted. Anyway, we totally enjoyed the flowers and it's nice to know the background behind them.

Wild or not, wildflowers are so whimsical and pretty.

LOL....... very good question. My thoughts are if it makes the travel day a little brighter, go with it!

Semantics, semantics, I guess. My view is they should call them "native" flowers--that would make a bit more sense! I have often thought I should harvest my California poppies of their seeds and scatter them about in bare spots around town...:)

The program is a good one, but I don't think they're 'wild'flowers when they're not growing wild. Maybe after the initial planting, and they continue to grow by leaps and bounds each year - I would say the flowers live up to their name of 'wild' then. Right? Oh, I'm confused now......LOL
Anyhoo, they're very pretty!
