Hello From The Heartland

After two days in the car we've arrived at our destination. This was the view from the window as we sped down a highway yesterday. I have managed to keep myself busy as a passenger with the never-ending tablecloth project, embroidering for hours on end, mile after mile. We stayed at a nightmare of a motel in Indiana, no joke. Suffice it to say we ended up staying there because it was late, we were traveling with an elderly relative and we didn't know how much farther she could go; we didn't think it could get any worse than it seemed when we checked in. It did and it was. There will need to be more elapsed time before we can look back and laugh at the experience, much more time, hopefully I'll live that long! I won't reveal the name of the place (afraid they'll sue me) to protect the innocent grossly blatant highway robbers, but I'm not sure I'd ever consider staying in Seymour again. There was a high spot yesterday, we stopped to eat lunch at a wonderful establishment in Covington, IN, The Beef House; the food is exceptional there. The piping hot yeast rolls and homemade strawberry jam are the best I've ever tasted. If you are ever traveling between Indiana and Illinois this is a stop that you simply must make, be sure and pack your appetite. We're off on more adventures today; Shullsburg, WI. Of course I'll report, you can count on that!

Life is Good!

It looks like you saw an awful lot of corn driving through IN!! Yuk, I can probably imagine your motel...the kind where you don't want to touch anything. Yup, been there.

Too bad about your Seymour experience. You were only about 50miles from our house though! We have a couple of guest rooms! Hope the rest of your trip goes well. Have fun!

You simply needed to be closer to Indianapolis to get a better motel. I have had that happen to me too. Gross/$$$ experience.
Come up to New Haven, Indiana...would love to meet you!

Did you stay at a "Worst Western"? My parents have driven across the country several times and that is the name they coined:) Sorry for the bummer of a night. On to greener pastures, eh?

I am sorry for your experience, once we stayed at a very stinky room(the same reasons, very late a snow storm and it was very late) so me and my husband promised next time we will do something as soon as we see the room. So another time they gave us a smoking room and we went and exchanged it, I was very happy camper then!
Good luck for the rest of the trip and your table cloth looks lovely!

A night in a scary hotel sure makes you appreciate home doesn't it....

Oh my goodness...We have stayed at a few places like that in our travels and usually when it was late and we were desparate for a place to stop. I think our worst was right outside of Baltimore. Surely you would think Baltimore would have nice hotels everywhere...Nope. Hope your journey continues safely.

I love driving across this big beautiful country of ours. I hope you are having a wonderful time. I have stayed in a seedy motel or two. Gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad motel experience, but it is hard to plan for a good hotel when you are traveling across country. There are stretches of road that you also have to really plan for gas stops.

If you find a hotel chain that you like, sign up for their frequent traveler's card, put their 800 number in your cell phone and grab one of their hotels guides. (We like Hampton Inns).

When traveling with Mom, it was useful to call ahead for a reservation, even if it was less than an hour's drive up the road. And, when traveling with an elderly relative, ask for a handicap room - they are usually closer to the elevator or on the first floor and the bathrooms are safer.

When you at at the Beef House, you were about half an hour north of me! My kids used to have their sports banquets there.

You were close by. Seymour is 45 minutes away (northeast). You would have done better heading on up I65 and getting off at Greenwood or even before that at Columbus.
