Lily... At Long Last!

This is a Blackberry Lily, it is currently blooming in my garden. I planted the seeds, given to me by an extended family member, almost 3 years ago. The summer of 2008 came and went with no sign of them and I completely forgot about the lilies. Then, last summer, here came a few sprouts up around the bird bath to remind me that I had scattered the seeds there. The foliage grew to a height of about 4" but never produced anything more than that. This summer the foliage emerged once again and soared from 4" to 4' ; seemingly overnight! (Had I known this was the height they would grow to reach I never would have surrounded the bird bath with them! The birds are confused now as to how they should approach for a cooling "dip"; navigating in has become an issue.) Last week I noticed flower stalks protruding from the leaves and, the last few days, blossoms have appeared! They are very small and delicate, each bloom only lasts only one day. They are aptly named for their seed pods, which cling after the blooms fade and will develop into blackberry-like clusters; that's the way they were presented to me, back in the fall of 2007. Blackberry Lily is it's name, but to me it will be known forever more as "Lily... At Long Last"!

Life is Good!

Very pretty....Whole Wheat would like these too. He has pointed out many types of lillies on our hikes.

How interesting - guess it just goes to prove you just have to have patience. My daughter planted some butterfly bushes for me - at least that is what she called them - from bulbs. She said they would be up by Mother's Day. Nothing this year - but maybe next year.
