A Roller Coaster Ride

Getting Mom transferred from the hospital to rehab was a roller coaster ride. There were quick twists and sharp turns, exhilarating ups and devastating downs; but, she's there. It's not easy, and it won't be rapid, but the recovery has begun. We've got our seat belts fastened as I'm sure this ride is going to be bumpy for some time to come. I feel protective of her, I find myself wanting to do the hard work for her; I'm reminded of taking my children to their very first days of school and working to convince myself that they would be fine, that they would find their way. This time I'm praying for Mom to find her way back. As a dear friend so kindly told me, she'll get there: "one day at a time, one step at a time, one prayer at a time". Thank you, so much, for the prayers and kind words.

I am reminded constantly that

Life is Good!
...it really, really is.

I hope and pray she "gets back" also! Bless you for all that you do.

With your love and support I'm confident that she will be even better than fine. May God keep her spirits up as she goes through this experience.

It is a difficult time for her (and for you). Not only does she need to rehab her body, but she also has to adjust to being dependent on others for a while. Anything you can do to keep her feeling vital, including having her little dog visit, is so important. Keeping your family in my prayers!

And, hard as it may be, she needs to have some time with no family present. Rehab (shared from experience) involves trying and failing repeatedly - not to mention being embarrassed, frightened, angry, and discouraged, often all at the same time. With so many things being difficult all at once, it is hard to allow those you care about and who care about you to witness every little failure or difficulty. Having some space to try on her own without witnesses is good for her and good for you (because caregivers need to care for themselves so they can care for the patient).

Gentle thoughts for healing during this significant time of challenges.

I totally agree with Quiltdivajulie....your MIL needs time both with and without you. If you hover too much she will feel bad for keeping you away from your life, but if you spend too much time, she'll feel ignored and also won't be able to learn the things she needs for independence. It's a fine balance. She needs time to learn to do for herself again, without having to depend on your for everything. This is a pivotal time for all of you. Hopefully she will succeed and flourish in rehab, and feel proud and strong again quickly. My prayers continue! Hugs!

Personally, I feel that reading the words "recovery has begun" is the most important. Starting out. Beginning. Gosh that's so important. I never do like thinking about the long road ahead but I like knowing we've started.

I've not been out blog visiting for awhile and I am just reading about your mother-in-law's fall. I do hope that she is getting better and that she continues to be cheerful.

Lord be with Mrs. Goodneedle's mother-in-law right now and help her see the good things around her. Give her patience, give her joy at the obstacles she overcomes hourly. Thank you for watching over her. In Jesus' name. Amen
