So... I wanted to get this love seat, a cast-off that came to reside right here in the studio, reupholstered. I decided that it should be covered in a neutral fabric, it had lived a life of plaid for twenty+ years, formerly in our family room; and it was way over-due for a change! I had a recommendation for a man who does upholstery work and I gave him a call. I had already been on the lookout for fabric (sample #1) but he suggested I drive to a place where all the home decorating fabric was discounted, a place where he had a good working relationship with the owner. I drove out there and found samples #2, #3 and #4. They don't look the same to you, do they? Of course not... they're not alike at all! After hours of deliberation I settled on sample #2. It's super soft and has a slight rib to the weave. #3 had too much pink in it, and #4 was too yellow. #1 was nice, but when all things were considered I felt the weave was too loose; and, at four times the price per yard (of the other samples) it was no longer in contention! Today the love seat is undergoing it's transformation; from it's former plaid, 'starring role' status to one of a supporting, background player... one where the colors and textures of the quilts in here will take center stage. My husband still doesn't understand, he thinks each sample looked exactly the same! Of course they don't, shades of beige are like shades of black, I tried to explain; but he just smiled. Smart man.Life is Good!
To set things straight: the wall quilt hanging in this photo is square and does hang level... believe me! The cushions on the sofa back needed adjusting when this picture was taken!

Once I enlarged the photo I could definitely tell that they were all...shades of beige. But of course, color never translates well in photos. : )
Picking out upholstery fabric is such a chore to me--it is so final! I can repaint a wall without too much trouble, but I can't redo a couch in an afternoon all by myself. One thing is for sure, the new fabric is going to do a much better job of setting off that beautiful quilt hanging above it!
Ah yes, I know that conversation well! It's been repeated around here a few times, most notably last summer while choosing new colors for the house....
I am with you on the neutral - so many of our quilts will match neutral - who knew. I love that pillow also - have the same saying, only framed and gave it to my daughter. She laughed.
#4 is my favorite, love the texture and color seems good. #1 would be second and the others pale.

Woohoo...I love to see old furniture re-purposed. This one is going to look fantastic.
Gotta make a plaid pillow just so the poor ol' sofa doesn't have an identity crisis!
