Keep Moving

My husband, Hannes and I are back to our pre-dawn walking schedule; thankfully. We've been able to concoct all sorts of  excuses for putting it off; but, the bottom line was, we needed to get back into the routine. Now that we have there's nothing stopping us... certainly not the weather, we've had no winter so far this year. I talked to a friend who has had some mobility issues lately, he told me that his Physical Therapist said that the single, best thing he could do for his health is to walk every day. It gets harder the older we get, that's the bad news. But the good news outweighs the bad... we're never too old to begin a walking regimen. Start slow but go as far as you can, increase your speed and perhaps your distance as your stamina improves. You don't need any fancy equipment, only shoes... and motivation! I feel better all day when I have walked; I have more energy and a happy, positive, attitude. The strong physical benefits are numerous too, there's just no downside to walking. We're lucky where we live, we can walk outdoors. I am thankful for the nature that surrounds me as I put one foot in front of the other, for almost two miles, and the glorious sunrises that we witness at the conclusion of our neighborhood hikes. Wherever you have that you can walk, do it; do it for yourself, do it for those you love,  make the commitment and then... just keep moving! Remember the quote attributed to Helen Hayes: "If you rest, you rust!"

Timely, from our devotional booklet this morning: "The goal is to stay on course with the team, for Jesus' sake. Each day is a new beginning." -Carolyn Coon Mowchan

For years I've walked 2 or 3 miles a day - I loved that time of quiet. Sometimes I listened to a book on my IPod and sometimes it was a time of prayer. I'm having some back issues now and the physical therapist made me stop walking for a few months. I miss it so much and look forward to the time, another month I think, when I can get back to it. blessings, marlene

I love walking, and there's nothing better than walking outdoors. I love walking on the beach the best, though. ;-)

Good for you! I started running last year to improve my cardio - vascular health and for weight loss, but am finding it difficult in this cold and ice to get out. I've just registered for a 10k charity run in June as motivation to get out again.

I've been walking the neighborhood most of the winter too......we still have no snow on the ground! I get in a good 2.5-3 miles each morning, rocking to my tunes and I come home feeling so uplifted even though I had to push myself out the door. The treadmill is such a boring alternative to outside.

I need to dust off my walking shoes myself.

I used to walk daily (not just here and there but really walk). Then the foot issues started. I've tried to begin again several times only to have the foot issue flare - I haven't tried lately because I was tired of being disappointed and frustrated. However, it has been a long time now - maybe, just maybe my cranky toes (neuroma) will behave so I can get back into the walk after work to "lose the office" can begin again.

Good post!

In good weather (March or April thru October or November) I walk in the mornings, but my joints never seem to recover all day if I walk in the frosty weather. Also, there are no sidewalks and no shoulder to the road out here, so when the snow piles up along the roadside it leaves no place to go except a dive into a snowbank if cars are coming both ways. So it is a recumbent bike indoors for me in the winter and I am itching to get out and walk again!
