Quilting... What's New And What's Not

I got the quilting finished and the binding on this baby quilt for our nephew's new addition this week. My husband and I spent the day in the car yesterday, a day trip to Weaverville, I managed to get all the handwork completed. Now with the binding whipped into place it is ready for mailing. Quiltkeemosabe gave me a tip a few years ago regarding binding... she hand bastes hers into place before the final step! Ever since she made this suggestion I have been basting my binding, it is such a pleasure to work on finishing a quilt that has no pins or clips to deal with, especially in the car!
Quilt binding basted into place and ready for finishing by hand.

What's new? Superior's MonoPoly on a 10,000 yard cone. Joy!

What else is new? This book, at least it's new to me. More self-imposed homework!
How old is this quilter/author anyway? Twelve??  The book and instructions are simply wonderful.

What's NOT new? This Crumb Baskets quilt. While demonstrating hand quilting last week to one of my students I heard myself telling her how relaxing hand quilting is; I'd forgotten that. This quilt, basted for hand quilting since 1998, was easily accessible and has become the object of my own relaxation sessions!

Such a cute quilt. I love the graphic look to the blocks and the big bubble letters.

I just bought Angela's book too and thought the same thing :-)

Oh, I'm so glad you are working on that baskets quilt.....it's gorgeous!

And basting the binding down is genius! Thanks!

I've gotten away from hand quilting by picking up the pointy sticks for knitting. I've been trying to use up the yarn stash so I CAN get back to hand quilting: I enjoy it so.

That is a warm and wonderful basket quilt. It will be beautiful hand quilted!
Did you enjoy machine quilting that little quilt? Looks very fun!
I've never seen the technique of basting the binding down. It would be especially helpful on a traveling project.

Basting binding--what an interesting concept. Might have to try that. Glad to hear Angela's book is worthwhile--it's definitely on my "to get" list. When you're finished hand quilting that quilt, wanna finish my Hawiaan for me? It's at least as old as your crumb baskets......

LIke the idea of basting the binding down. I also saw somewhere (and did try and liked) a suggestion to do a wide zig zag stitch with a fusible thread in the bobbin in the seam allowance all around the quilt edge. Then just take it to your ironing board and fold binding edge over and hit briefly with an iron all around the quilt fusing it in place. Nothing to hold in place and is quick to do. Then hand stitch down with no pins to stick.

Great idea about the binding basting ... I get SO tired of being stuck with pins or having my thread get caught on pins while finishing up a binding. Good idea! LOVE the quilt you are hand quilting ... is there a pattern for it or did you just "design" it in your head?

Beautiful baby quilt. I also love hand quilting, especially in the winter months when the quilt doubles up to keep me warm!

Great post!!! Love that quilt at the bottom. Definitely for hand quilting. Definitely. And I'm really loving the idea of basting down the binding. Never heard that in a million years but that'll save my hands, too!
