Why I Make Quilts

I made this quilt for Mason before he was born. He sleeps with it every night, it is soft and worn from use and washing; as far as I'm concerned this is the very best kind of quilt... one that is used and loved. He left his precious possession with me for repair overnight, the binding needed to be stitched back down. I did so gladly. This is why I make quilts, to cover and comfort those that I love... there's no better feeling, no greater reward.

Life is Good!

Amen!! My quilts won't win any prizes, but they are made with love for the people I love. <3

My mom used to call them love quilts because you would always feel wrapped in her love. I try to carry on her tradition.

I made my son's teenaged step-son a queen sized quilt 3 years ago.(He calls us Grandma and Grampa.) He's sleeps with it, loves it and has asked for another one. I can tell it's his security now that he's at that stage of life where he's "testing his independance." There are large squares quilted with large x's. The bias threads got broken. I requilted every square. I learned from this that any quilt in the future will have more on-grain quilting to support the bias areas. Always something to learn! I was feeling a little disappointed but now I am reminded of his love for his quilt and that's all that's important. Thank you for reminding me that a quilt is to be loved and if it gets warn it can be mended.

What a great tradition quilting is. I dont make prize winning quilts but mine are made with love and, I always in making the quilt
stick my finger, so all of my quilts have my DNA in them. Thanks for the post. Somtimes it takes a post to make us think about things we forget.

In June my great nephew who is 8 came with his Dad and sister for my Aunt's 80th birthday. He slept with his dad on the sofa bed. When I was folding up the blankets, I saw he had the blanket I made when he was a baby. He quietly stuck it in his bag--it really made me feel good. How dear that quilt must be to him. You never know what your quilts mean to others. I know I put alot of love into mine.

My goal when I make a quilt for a little one is to see it used and maybe ragged. I come from the generation of put it up for good, at least that is what my mother would tell me. Enough of that thought process, I use my "good" dishes every day, only those of us of a certain age can understand this.

Gregory has started sleeping with his ABC quilt. He says "Bug" which means "make me snug as a bug in a rug."

When I make quilts for baby shower gifts, I tell the mom-to-be that I want the quilt to be used and abused; it's to be a blankie for the baby to use as he/she pleases. The only one who didn't listen was my own DIL! lol
