Cicada Cacophony and Confusion

There seems to be some confusion surrounding the question of how often the Cicadas swarm, I've heard both every 13 and every 17 years. We've lived where we are since September of 2001 and this is our first experience with the deafening, cacophonous, din; I have no history from which to assign a time period to this strange phenomenon. Turn up your speakers and listen to this film clip of what it sounds like when I step outside these days! This should continue for a few more weeks, the loud buzz is audible even inside the house with the windows tightly closed.  Adding to the Cicada confusion is the fact that only a few miles from here, even in wooded ares, it is perfectly silent. Hmmm...

And, since we're on the subject of confusion, I thought you'd enjoy seeing the Ivy Geranium that I bought in the bud stage and potted up into a hanging basket for the natual area where my bird feeders reside, it was labled "red". I bought it to help draw the hummingbirds! Hmmm...

Wow, does this go on 24/7? That could drive you mad.
We get a lot of noise from the tree frogs across the road at night, but we don't have to listen to it all day--just when we are trying to sleep. : )

How long is it supposed to last? My little dog likes to eat the live ones and the neighbor's chickens eat the shells.

I'm confused, too. We had an 'invasion' a 2-3 years ago, with all the noise and mess!! I have pic's and one of our dachshunds 'feasted' on those little critters. The noise was the same as yours, but so far, this year we haven't seen any. I don't understand why we had so many then and none so far this year. (ps...when I played your video, all my dogs ears perked up and they looked my way...LOL)

I think the ones we have at our house are 17 year because that is how long we have been here.
I had them coming out in my garden and there are little holes all over. They climbed up on all the veggies so now I have all those little shells they leave.
They didn't stay in our woods and sounds like they are in the neighbors so it isn't too loud for us.

Actually there are both kinds. And some that come out every year. The 17 year are the big group you dont miss-over 500 cicadas per person in NC.

I remember them as a child living in Houston. Our yard had a lot of pines and their shells were stuck everywhere. I guess they are like natures white noise for a while.

Love your "red" flower!

We used to tent camp when we lived in Indiana - one of the 13-year swarms kept us company one summer. Good Grief !!!

As Colleen said, there are different kinds with different periods plus the annual ones. And, the 17 year ones come out in different years. The ones several years ago were brood X. This year is brood II. You can read all about it here: http://www.cicadamania.com/where.html

Don't you remember last year was the nine year one? It was deafening in Asheboro. Ironically I'm a h, skip, and jump from you and these aren't making a peep here yet. It's odd.
