It's Snowing Down South

We had snow on Tuesday, it snowed for over twelve hours; a super-fine, talc-like snow, we only ended up with about two inches when it was all said and done. The temperature hovered all day at 15 degrees. It was nice to have snow, albeit a very small amount, it's been a long time. When I was growing up if someone said "it's snowing down south" that was a cue to tug down the hem of your skirt as that translated to "your slip is showing"! I doubt that phrase is tossed about any longer, slips seem to be passé. If you don't believe me try shopping for one. Snow, the real kind, is a big deal in the South... life, as we know it, halts. Cancellations are the norm and every grocery store shelf is wiped clean of milk and bread. We were treated to a night visitor on Wednesday evening, this caller left tracks behind! Across the driveway (left) and right up the brick sidewalk (below) he/she marched, the walkway that leads to my studio. Aren't the hoofprints of our visiting deer sweet? They look like hearts. The snow was pretty while it lasted, it's nothing but a fond memory now. Oh, and back to that old, archaic saying that I grew up with. Since it's so hard to find a slip anymore I find myself shopping for skirts that are lined, I can't deny an upbringing that demands I settle for anything less.
Life is Good!

Preach it, sistah! I have a black slip and a white slip and I'm terrified that I will outlive them....

I have not heard that expression before Debra but it makes sense.. As for the snow, well we are pretty familiar with the white stuff as we have had on the ground since the beginning of November- about this time of year it gets a bit tiresome .. While we have had alot of snow we have not had a lot of cold days (the deep cold of -30C + a windchill) I think that is in the negative teens of Fahrenheit scale. When it gets to minus 40 it doesn't matter which scale you use- its just plain cold. It probably sounds like not much fun but I will take the cold days over freezing rain anytime which we have had a couple of times this winter. I am terrible in the heat of summer because it rarely gets to +90 Fahrenheit here. We don't have air conditioning in our houses so it is hard to stay cool.. Its just different weather experiences...
Regards, Anna

I'm the same way re: slips. I cannot nor will not wear an unlined dress or skirt without one. ;-) Thankfully I've still got several (black and white, both in various lengths) from years and years ago. The elastic in one is wearing out ... I dread the day when I have to replace it.

Us good Southern girls know about slips or petticoats as I learned to call them first. Try the Hanes Mill Outlet. They usually have them.

Since I don't own a dress or skirt, a slip is a moot point. Do you think that was a rabbit?

in Georgia we got about 2 inches, Atlanta got more

I haven't worn a petticoat for years. I don't even own one. But my skirts are all heavy or dark material that you cant see through. I remember wearing my nursing uniform in my younger WITHOUT a petticoat and being reprimanded by the charge Sister. I was working on the Gynae ward and she was worried the male visitors would see my legs! It was a very hot day at the time and no airconditioning.

Had to laugh when I saw your title and wondered if you knew the meaning of that phrase. Guess we will be the last generation that does.

I recall that saying--and the associated meaning. But you are right. So many just don't wear slips anymore.
I have a long and short black and a long and short ecru. But I have found a couple of stores that still have them--not like they used to, but at least they are there. Maybe I should stock up!
Love seeing the animal tracks in the snow. : )

Now there's a phrase I haven't heard in a longtime. And yes, I understand how a little snow can bring a city to a screeching halt. Seattle is like that since they get so little snow. This side of the mountains is a whole other story. Every other pickup truck has a snowplow attached to the front end.

Hhhm, I wonder if I still have any slips in my drawer....but then, when is the last time I wore a dress or skirt?

yep, I remember that saying about snowing down south, and there is definitely no likelihood of real snow in the south here, maybe frost, but no snow!

I know what you mean about trying to find a slip! Although, one of the sewing blogs I read... when she sews skirts/dresses, she lines them and then puts a cute lace at the bottom of the lining (about 2"'s or so above the actual hem)to make it look like it's a slip. Sooo clever! I guess you could do that!
