Wake Up To Warm

I discovered this Multigrain Hot Cereal from Trader Joe's when I stopped in to buy the regular steel-cut variety oats last week. During the winter months we love nothing better than waking up to a bowl of warm, steaming cereal that has cooked overnight in the crock pot. Last night I set the slowcooker up using this multigrain cereal and plugged it in; good to go... or so I thought. Let me caution you not to try this without your glasses on! This morning when I got up I could hear the lid to the slowcooker jiggling furiously, strange, I thought; the sound was accompanied by a roasty-toasty smell. I turned on the overhead light and lifted that jiggling lid to find the crock lined with well-cooked, multi-grain leather. Yep.  I checked the setting, only to find that it had cooked it on HIGH for seven hours! This isn't a set-up that I recommend, unless you want hot cereal jerky. What I can recommend though, highly, is this cereal; cooked the proper way, it is absolutely delicious.

Here's the recipe for overnight hot cereal in a slowcooker:
Butter the inside crock of your slowcooker and add an amount of dry cereal grains consistent with the number of servings that you wish to prepare (check the label). Whatever that amount is, triple it in liquid (can be all water, all milk or water/milk combination) and add that to the dry cereal, stir to mix. Put on the lid and set your slowcooker to WARM (or your lowest setting).

Believe me, I know precisely where that setting is now; I've woken up... to "warm"!
Life is Good!

Something similar happened in my household recently. I asked DH to turndown the crockpot from high to low on the roast beef. I went into the sewing room and when it came time to add the vegetables, I realized he had turned it to warm. Needless to say, there was no Sunday pot roast that day!

That must have been a huge disappointment the morning of the leather discovery!

We love crockpot oatmeal for breakfast. I will have to look for this kind at TJ's. Try using apple juice for part of your liquid; it is really good that way.

My way of cooking that cereal it is by the bowl and microwaved with the addition of dried cranberries and toasted walnuts and cinnamon--yummy. Since I like it a little on the chunky-chewy side, this works great.

This cereal sounds wonderful, I don't think we have it here in the UK :(

I need a small crock pot to go with our large one. This sounds like a GREAT excuse to purchase one!

WE love hot oatmeal during the winter; my daughter cooks it overnight in her crock pot but I've never tried it. Since we are limited to what type of grains we can have, I'll stick to oatmeal with dried fruit added in.
Thanks for sharing!

Lucky you didn't blow the lid off your crockpot! Never a dull moment, right?

Mmmmm Love the crock pot idea. We use Bobs Red mill Mighty Tasty mixed grain cereal. No wheat or oats. Takes 20 min. to cook stovetop. Gotta try this. Thanks!
