I've gone back to the notebook that I used last week for this week's topic question.What do you consider the most intimidating quilting technique, but would still like to give it a try?
After saying last week that traditional quilts are my favorites, it seems contradictory to admit that I'd love to learn how to draft and execute an art quilt using perspective and depth in an ultra-contemporary design; one that incorporates spheres and pyramids. I will find myself standing at shows, blown away by those types of quilts and thinking: "how did they think of that, how did they do that?"
...and sew, "let's talk"...

I don't do curved piecing, so that might fit the category. Machine piecing Y-seams too. Actually I don't really have a strong desire to do either at this time but might someday.

I would like to learn how to do landscapes from photo's that I love. Also I would like to learn how to freemotion quilt. I have tried to freemotion with limited sucess. I just haven't invested enough time into learning either
ReplyDeleteCURVES, tried them, and got so frustrated that I had to remind myself that quilting is suppose to be something that I find enjoyment doing...so it would really take a stunning pattern for me to try them again. I do want to make a Mariner's Compass someday.

Most intimidating for me? Intricately detailed paper piecing ~ I simply cannot bend/twist my mind far enough to work successfully in reverse . . .

ReplyDeleteI've done all the things mentioned here by the others, & I think the one thing that intimidates me is the intricate paper piecing. When it comes to that I always seem to redraw the pattern so I can do it in applique. Love applique and don't do enough of it.

ReplyDeleteTemplates . . . . they are the bane of my quilting existence. If not for the rotary cutter and strip piecing, I don't know that I would be a quilter. I just can't seem to master templates *s*
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt...free motion machine quilting. I just have so much trouble getting that tension right on the bobbin and then my curves always get the tension off too. Practice makes perfect, so they tell me.

ReplyDeleteThere are lots of techniques that I have almost no experience- with needle turn applique and hand quilting. Both of those things are pretty intimidating to me- the other thing would be drafting a pattern and doing portraiture like Charlotte Warr Anderson does- All of them are beautiful but would not be my techniques of choice and certainly are intimidating..
I don't mind curves, love paper piecing and strip piecing and really enjoy machine quilting..
Isn't it interesting how one person's love would be the last thing that another person's would choose.
What ever technique you choose, have fun and enjoy the process.

I think "Art Quilts" are intimidating. The ones where you have to paint and glaze and lay down layers of thread and bits of paper and all those "artsy" things. I like to let the fabric I work with be my "art" and use it to make pretty things. I am NOT artistic at all.
