I took this quiz online, you can click on the link "How's Your Spelling" below to try it for yourself. I won a spelling bee in the sixth grade. I remember it was down to only me and Johnny Mulcahy, the event was held on the stage in the 'cafetorium' (multi-purpose rooms, with names to match, were a fresh concept for schools built in the sixties). It was my first time to use a microphone, what a funny thing to remember. The winning word? "Lieutenant"!

How coincidental! I won in 5th grade against Lewis Oppenheimer and the word was "people." He couldn't spell "police." I had the flu in 6th which was a shame because that was the grade where the winner got to go to the next level.
Thanks for the memory!

LOL I struck out early with February in elementary school. I'll try the test.
One of the most delightful productions I have ever seen is "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee". If you've never seen it, keep a look out -- it's funny and touching.
I was horrible in 6th grade spelling and Mr. Jones gave me lots of words to practice at home. Guess it must have worked....I got a 10/10 too. :-)
Poor Johnny must have been devastated when you beat him. The two of you lead very different lives now....but I dare say he's probably has more experience with microphones now than you do.
PS: wouldn't it be embarrassing to spell something wrong on this particular post's comments? ;-)
Funny you should post about spelling, since the local news has been all over the teenagers using txtmessaging abbreviations in formal school writing papers. Not a good thing.
*woohoo* 100% - spelling always came naturally to me . . . the trouble is that my typing is not always so good *s*
OK- I got 8/10. I thought I'd do better! Thanks for the challenge.
