This is a follow up to my last post, the one where I admitted to being directionally challenged. Yesterday was the third meeting of our "Head For The Border" group where we enjoyed an inspirational show and tell as well as learned our next "assignment" based on the random choice of a design element and a color. The element selected from the envelope was
squares. Easy enough, right? The color chosen:
brown. Hmmm. Well, I decided that if I needed to add one more color I would add four; so, along with brown I am incorporating orange, blue and purple into this next round. Now, for a design plan. Squares, as is, were too boring. Squares set on point, however, intrigue me and continue the movement outward. I have placed three design possibilities up for consideration and for voting.
Let me know what you think: #1, #2, or #3.
#1 & #3 are almost identical, except for the corner blocks. (Pretend there's purple thrown in there too).
#2 is comprised of teeny, tiny squares, that border measures 1", finished.

Having to incorporate brown into this happy mix of colors must be a challenge in and of itself, but you have made it work on your drawing!
ReplyDeleteI think #1, and #3 get my vote, with #3 having the edge. I like the way the corner B/W blocks are forming a sort of chain out from your center.
I really like #1 but am wondering if you can add a small border between the geese and the squares? The borders seem to run together. I love what you have created!
ReplyDeleteWell, I have to be different and vote for #2. I like the way it frames the geese. The other two look like they're competing with the geese, at least to my eyes. But, that's my .02 since you asked for it.

I vote for # 2. It makes it look more like a separate round. I think # 1 and 3 just make the last round look wider, if that makes any sense.

ReplyDeleteI vote for #2-it catches my eye the most but also looks like the most work LOL. Neat quilt! I hope you can find a "bright" brown, or is that an oxymoron?
ReplyDeleteI vote for #2 because the smaller size of the squares is not as similar to what you already have in the quilt. To me the change is important.
ReplyDeleteI like #2 altho I think you could make them a bit larger if you dont' want to have to order new glasses! I think the difference in scale gives your eye something to look at. In 1 and 3, the scale of the borders is very similar. This is going to be very striking whatever you choose!

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the black and white in both options with black and white becomes the focus and no longer an accent to add interest to the center block. I love the second option and the first is calmer to me, but the black and white is all I see until I stop and look harder. In my defens, i love black and white accents on brightly colored quilts.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely #2. It echos the smaller black and white border already in the quilt and I think it will add a greater sense of separation between rows. To me #1 and #3, being roughly the same size. run together a bit, although I know that using different colors will probably help with that. But...what do I know? Just think, in a little over a month - quilt heaven at Mid-Atlantic!

ReplyDeleteI vote for number two! The others are nice, but seem to be too close in size with the geese and sort of compete with them.
ReplyDeleteI'm torn between #2 and #3. I love the change in scale in #2 but also love how the continuation of the black chain draws your eyes to the corners of the quilt. I lean more to #2 though knowing there are more border challenges to come and the change of scale will help define the quilt. Either way, it's a beauty!
ReplyDeleteI like number 2, but don't know if I would want to make so many 1" finished squares! I agree that 1 and 3 borders seem to run into each other, so could you separate them somehow? Love the concept of this project. Can I have some more details as a possibility for our group??

ReplyDeleteN°2 is my favourite. I like the difference in scale. N°1 would look nice with that black & white border separating the borders but to be consistent, this would have to work with subsequent borders. Might be tricky since you don't know what those will be. Good luck! :-)

Number two! I agree that you need a different size/scale.
ReplyDeleteNumber two is my favorite, but they're all striking. I like the complexity of one and two, but number two seems slightly better balanced both in color and design. No matter which way you go, the quilt will be visually intriguing.

ReplyDeleteI like #2 for a couple of reasons. It mirrors the size of your second border, creating consistency in the design. Also, if you don't plan to add any more brown, blue, purple or orange into the quilt, this keeps the amount you do add to a minimum. Another thing, #1 and #3 makes the quilt seem busier to my eye - which may be what you are going for, but I see #2 as more your style, based on what I see in your blog.
