You see that brick ledge that extends underneath the screens on our back porch? It only measures about 6". Back a few weeks ago, when Dad was here, he was sitting out on the back patio enjoying an afternoon cup of coffee. Augie was with him, he always stays close, rarely wanders. The patio is located on the opposite side of the porch from what is pictured here. Dad was finishing up his coffee, I asked him, "where's Augie?" We both knew that he'd not left the patio. I started looking, becoming a bit panicked because he wasn't responding when called. I walked out behind the porch and there he was: sitting on that ledge where the arrow is pointing. He wasn't moving, he was frozen with fear. At that point it's approximately 9' off the ground! I ran down into the garage and grabbed a ladder. Propping the ladder against the ledge I scrambled up, reached for Augie, and he almost leapt into my arms; he then "melted" right into my shoulder as I climbed down. All we can figure is that he followed a lizard from the patio, behind the porch, all along that ledge; until he ran out of ledge at the corner! I didn't breathe again until we were both safely on the ground!

You can see our quick fix to keep this from happening again, a stack of bricks to thwart any more escapes. I have to say, though, I truly doubt that he would try it again; I know how scared he was!

He's always been a "percher"; on the back of the sofa, on a cabinet in my sewing room or on the end table! I know, it causes me to shake my head too. I suppose since his legs are only 6" long he feels that he needs to elevate himself to make sure that he's seen. I see you, Augie, you're quite the dare devil and you absolutely scare me to death sometimes; we will continue to do everything that we can to make sure that you stay safe! We'd all feel better if you'd choose to maintain a lower, much lower, existence.
I sometimes wonder if he's part cat!

Oh, my goodness! So glad he’s okay and hopefully not eager to try risky stunts again any time soon!
whew....like a kid who climbs without knowing the danger...glad he was rescued!
