GBY, My Southern Album

I had class #4 today, the Southern Album quilt. Everyone in the class has made splendid fabric choices and their quilt blocks just sing! Mine look fine here at home; but they're not singing, they're barely humming. I like my blocks but in comparison to everyone else's I've nicknamed mine the GBY (Great Big Yawn). You be the judge, these wouldn't exactly elicit a standing ovation or even an encore, would they? The five finished blocks are pictured here with the border (focus) fabric hanging beside them... they're a bit boring. There are fifteen blocks total, the final being the central medallion. I have lots more time to start tuning this masterpiece, or at the very least begin teaching this quilt the words to the song! I'm not expecting harmony, just a lovely, catchy little melody that we can all be happy singing together. That's not too much to ask now, is it?

Life is Good!

I've seen lots of southern album quilts, and quilted about 6 of them...at last count! I think your blocks are stunning! There is no great big yawn about them at all!

I think the blocks sing together just fine, the border fabric is prefect. I think you are being to hard on your pick and the blocks.

My opinion is that your blocks are exquisite, that the colors are wonderful, and if you don't like it when it is done, you can give it to me!!!

They're singin' to ME! Those are stunners - just the right bit of yellows and golds to add spark, and your colors are so clear and bright. Not to worry, it's gorgeous!

The song seems fine from here *s*

These are brighter than some I have seen...I think they actually show off the work better. I hate to see a quilt so muted that the casual eye can't distinguish all the piecework.

You're right. GADS!Shameful. I say - start over. I'll shoot you my addy so you can send your practice blocks to LeeHaven.

Orphanage of Love, *karendianne.

(ps: might want to include the border fabric so the blocks don't get cold at the LeeHaven Orphange overnight sleeping.)

I know I have limited quilting experience, but I do sing, and I'd do a duet with this quilt anytime! It's beautiful. Perhaps you're expecting it to sing Mozart when it's really singing Bach....it's all in the eye/ear of the beholder.

OH MY GOODNESS -- I love them, they are singing beautifully for me! Too bad Nancy asked first if she can take them off of your hands, because as I read your post, I thought OK I would take them in a blink! If Nancy turns them down, and you give them up -- here I am LOL! Have a great day, as I hum your song!

I think the reason you aren't hearing the music is that they don't sing with the neutrality of your design wall...but they of themselves - and when the rest of the ensemble gets in there - WOW! They're singing for me!! And I've seem your applique close up--so I know these are bound to be exquisite. Count me third in line for taking them off your hands... :-)

They sing like a southern Belle to me,, go ahead and make the rest and put them together with the border fabric you have chosen, thes quilt it with some beautiful design and put it in a box and send it to ME....If I was you I really wouldn't keep it!!! One of these days when I come to "steal" Hannes, I'll just pick it up then, save you the postage!
Seriously, I love it, you're being way too hard on yourself. Stand back, take a deep breath and look at it through all your blogging friends eyes, and you will love it too. Bobbin

I think your blocks look great. Maybe you just have gotten too used to them, so you've learned to tune out their singing.

I think your blocks are beautiful! When I first saw them I thought " I wish I could pick colors like that!" I can't believe you don't like them!

I think your problem is that the blocks with the border fabric are very harmonious. But they have to be as the border fabric is quite busy. I tried to imagine to add another colour, and I just could not figure out which one that would be. When finished the quilt will be beautiful and will bring joy for a lot of years I am sure!
Take care.
