My Adventures In New England, Continued...

We were in New England last week. We stayed at my childhood home, with my Mom and Dad, after the wedding (see previous post). One afternoon, out of the blue, my Dad said "c'mon, ride with me" and off we went in his pick-up to get a pie for dessert. There's a farm stand just up the road, and it occurred to me that this is one of the quintessential things that defines New England in a way that words cannot. Farm stands, such as this, that sell plants and vegetables and bakery goods and ice cream; all set on quaint and picturesque farms dotting the countryside, a place in America that remains unchanged... like a classic Norman Rockwell painting. We stepped inside to be greeted by the most tempting bakery scents and sights... it was easy to be distracted by the muffins and doughnuts, too. But, we came for pie, strawberry rhubarb, there was one left... and it was ours!

I held the pie, secured neatly in it's own white bakery box, for the short drive home. My dad took an alternate route over roads as familiar to me as the back of my own hand. The timelessness of this moment didn't go unnoticed; I was a little girl again, riding in my daddy's truck, chatting easily about anything and everything as the minutes slipped away. The dessert-to-come held the fragrant promise of sweetness sitting right there on my lap, but it didn't hold a candle to that truck ride home, once again, with my dad behind the steering wheel.

Life is Good!

Boy does that post make me homesick! We had a both a farmstand and a Mrs. Bent's cookie factory within walking distance of my home growing up. Strawberry rubarb...yummm. (I'm sure your Dad liked the truck ride as much as you did!)

Oh Mrs G, what a love post! I could almost smell your pie, & hear your easy conversation with your father. You are lucky you could still make that journey.

This is such a nice post. I'm envious of your time with your parents....something very precious and to be savored. You know, the only time I've ever been on a snowmobile was with your Dad....that's a wonderful memory for me.
