Training The Brain

I'm in training, or at least my brain is! My daughter and son-in-law gave me this game for my birthday with a small hand held Nintendo DS on which to play it. This was not something I had wished for; to be honest, I only learned about it after I opened it... but I can assure you that I will use it every day. In order to keep your brain age young and your gray matter active there are a series of exercises to perform daily, there's a calendar which records your commitment and gives you a stamp each day, and there's a graph to chart your progress. So far, so good. (2 days in!)

I remember years ago I had a quilt student (she was an attorney) telling me how happy she was to be taking a quilting course because it was one activity where she wasn't required to use her brain! Can you imagine? Suffice it to say she wasn't the teacher's 'pet' after that comment!

Well, certainly quilters DO use their brains and this training game activates parts of my brain that have been a little, well, maybe... sluggish? The exercises put to work the pre-frontal cortex. Gee, I didn't even know that's where I needed extra help until I started trying to zip through math problems against a clock and remember sequences of numbers. I'm feeling sharper already.

Yes, I'm in training, brain-training. Now, as for the running shoes and athletic socks I also received yesterday... I may need to break those in a little more gradually! One thing at a time.

Life is Good!

My sister had this game this summer and I tried it out for a little. Actually I had to argue with it because I know some of the answers I gave it were correct and it said they weren't!!!! Arguing with a machine is probably not the smartest idea! I'll have to watch you closely to see how you progress.

Quilters certainly use their brains -- but, in a different way than some kinds of work. And well, if I've got a lot of chain piecing to do -- I can't say my brain gets used ALL that much!

I've wanted to try that game out for ages -- almost enough to make me ask for a DS for Christmas!

Anything that gets your brain working is a good thing....can't hurt in any case. Keep us posted on your progress.

They talked about that game in the memory book that I mentioned on my blog. I'm laughing because I don't remember what they said about it other than it was made to help train the brain.
Please continue to let us know whether you continue to like the game and whether it seems to be working for you.

Belated happy birthday for the other day! If it were me with that DS game I think I'd have to ask for a new brain for my birthday - so busy at present I feel a bot like the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz :o)

I've never seen it but now that I'm aware I'll be on the lookout. I started doing difficult Sudoku puzzles as a brain-engaging activity. It's important that we take steps to stay sharp.

oooh, I could see my son and daughter-in-law giving me this... especially after all of us living through my mother's Alzheimer's journey. Numbers are generally not my "thing" but, like the daily exercise imposed by my cardiologist, I'd give it a shot. Every little thing we do now will help us keep playing with our fabrics and colors just a little bit longer!

Happy Birthday! I saw the commercials on TV and it looked like fun. If I had it I would yell at it and then everyone one would think I was crazy.

Have fun and I hope you do not hurt your brain.

I just wanted to say that I've browsed through your pages and you remind me a lot of my mom. Some of your blogs have really touched me and I hope you keep up the good work that God is doing in you!

I cannot believe anyone would think quilting does NOT use one's brain! I have become pretty darn good at fractions simply because I quilt!
I love the idea of 'training the brain' - I think mine could stand some RE-training, to tell you the truth!! I do work crossword puzzles every week, so that is my brain training. Keeps us young, say what?
