Will Work For Fabric

Five of the gals at my LQS have left on an adventure, traveling to Steckborn, Switzerland to visit the very place where our Bernina "babies" are born! Naturally, this leaves the LQS a bit short-staffed; so much so that they've called in moi to fill in some of the time while they're away. This would be a dream job except for a "few" things... namely, bolts upon bolts of fabric! (Remember this is my self-proclaimed "no buy" year!) I'm reminded of a friend who, years ago, told me that she was so tempted off of her diet by donuts that she decided to work in a donut shop as therapy for her donut "addiction"; she claimed it worked! I don't know how long I'd have to work in and around fabric for this to have a similar, curing effect, on me! Decades? The fabric buying pheromones are hard at work to un-do my resolve! I'm even bargaining with my own conscience... "do fat quarters count"? They don't... do they?

"...and lead me not into temptation..."
Life is Good!

Fat quarters definitely do not count. It's like tasting your own cooking while in the kitchen.
Or eating one chocolate from the box.
Second thoughts, it could lead to bigger things!!

You see, the thing about fabric is that they have nothing but positive effect on your health! ;o) Yea, I don't call working in a quilt shop work! lol I worked for more than 3 years in a quilt shop, part time of course. I needed the fabric, not the money! lol It was quite costly to work there! Have fun! Enjoy fondling all the fabrics!

Ps: I can see it coming! Customer comes to the cutting counter, "gosh that's pretty, I haven't seen this one" and while putting fabric away, "Oh, I must have a bit of that", "Now would you look at this one, I've been needing that one!" At least fabric isn't fattening! Have fun!

Manager: Wow. Sales are through the roof.

Mrs. G: Yep. Big sales today. Sold lots and lots of fat quarters.

Manager: There must have been a lot of customers in while I was out...

Mrs. G: Ummm... well.... not really. by the way... can I have a raise??

just remember....
the more fabric you have, the more you use, and the more scraps you have to send to those cute kindergarteners! :)

by the way, they LOVE using the fabric.....
however i am making them do things without glue this week because they have already used up all the glue that was in the art center (8 glue sticks and 2 bottles of elmers!) i am hoping that the absence of glue will help them learn to appreciate and respect the class materials!
but i am also NOT holding my breath on that! :)

There are so many other (non) fun things you can get at the shop - like new rotary blades. I know, boring, BUT isn't it great to cut with a new blade? Or thread. I am almost out of neutral thread and wondering if I will make it to the store in time. How about new pins. I can't stand dull pins - and those sharp pins cost a bit. How fun to be surrounded by all the newest and greatest though!

Cheers!

a quilter without fabric buying or shopping just does not work so if you fancy a treat,,,, why not...at least they are not pounds and pounds of chocolates, chocs are bad for your teeth, fat quarters are not....:o)

I agree, fat quarters are like tasting your own cooking, (great analogy!!) Maybe she will pay you in fabric then you won't be buying it, technically...right?

The way I see it - you have decided to not buy any fabric. As long as no money exchanges hands, you are being given fabric in trade for the work. The fact that you have to get a paycheck so you can share your money with the IRS is just the mechanics of staying legal.

Enjoyed "working with you and Miss H" . I have always wondered why some of the fabric in quilt shops feel "funny" Could it be the drooling we do over it???? Nasty thiught!!! NEW RULES----- FAT QUARTERS DO NOT COUNT!!!! See ya'll in about a month. Keep everyone straight until I get back.

Ya know -- maybe, you can give yourself permission for a treat. I'm thinking the whole starvation thing in a fabric diet is just as bad as in a healthy eating diet. It makes the fall when it comes (and it will) so much worse. Why not look at it as a healthy buying plan? Allow yourself SOMETHING -- a treat, but not the entire cake (or bolt as it may be).

No, of course fat quarters don't count!! LOLOL!! They're too small, right? I think if all you suffer from is a fabric 'addiction', you're doing well!!! Enjoy 'working' in the shop, you lucky girl!
