Stitched Together

Our Pastor used a wonderful example in her sermon this past Sunday in reference to being one as a church family. She spoke about the importance of the church family and how we come to value that even more as we grow older, I do believe that's true for me. Then, she used the example of being stitched together. She explained that God stitches us together; year by year, day by day, hour by hour and minute by minute. God is the fabric, Jesus the needle and the Holy Spirit is the thread that binds the work as one. I love reflecting on this, being stitched together as one. I love thinking about being part of God's family within the church and that being a part of me, of who I am, and how we can't be separated one from another. This illustration of the Trinity not only gives me comfort but it just plain makes my heart smile... broadly!

Our younger son's church has quilt sunday each year. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring family quilts or treasured baby quilts, etc. They are draped along the communion rails, over pew packs, from the balcony, in the choir loft, etc. His sermon and all of the liturgy involves quilty metaphors. It is a wonderful service and one the congregation really looks forward to each year.

Powerful analogies last a long time ...

What an AWESOME analogy ... and one that resonates in this quilter's heart! ;-)

Gives you pause to think, what a great analogy. A church is more like a old time quilt from a quilting bee. Shared fabrics, old and new, different stitcher's old to young. A cooperative effort. Sometimes I feel at our church home we have individual quilters who work in isolation and push to get the work done with their agenda. I prefer the give and take method of church families....
Love my God...hate "church" politics.

Great metaphors have a life of their own and I think become richer as one lives with them. I am imagining Pastor Shirley giving that sermon, and it makes me smile. My imagery has a back drop of Nane's heirloom family quilts... such contentment.

Thanks for sharing. This one is perfect for quilters. We did a VBS one summer using the apple to explain the Trinity to children.
