When Did This Happen?

I had a five pound bag of sugar on my grocery list but was unable to find one on the store shelves... anywhere! The bags all weigh FOUR pounds now! When did this happen? Has it been a gradual step-down process that I didn't even notice; from 5 to 4.75 or even 4.5 pounds? I have no idea. But, all the brands have fallen into this four pound compliance. No wonder I've been buying more sugar this summer to make hummingbird nectar... and here I was blaming it on my tiny hummers and their ravenous appetites! Am I alone here in my ignorance to this change? Well, the good news is that the price hasn't changed a bit!
Wink.

I have noticed weight changes in the products but the prices remain as high or higher ... much like candy bars used to be bigger ... now they're HALF the size of the package they're in! I liked the good ole days .....

Yep, been happening with LOTS of foods..cereal's another. So we think 'hey, prices aren't going up, YAY' when instead the amount we're getting is going down! Oh well.

It's actually been like that for some time. And, no, it wasn't gradual. I rarely spend less than $100 on a grocery trip and yet my paycheck stays the same.

For a while here, the name brands stayed at 5 pounds - then, seemingly overnight, ALL of the offerings were 4 pounds.

Sugar has been 4 lb bags for quite a while where I live. The smaller bag was noticeable to me. I go through LOTS of hummer food in the summer and make up a gallon of "juice" at a time--store in quart plastic bottles in the freezer. I started buying the 10 lb bags during the summer. One gallon lasts me about 3 weeks refilling the food every 4-5 days.

I hadn't noticed. I buy my sugar in 25 lb. bags. Wonder if I have been getting 21 lbs. and never realized it. : )

I hate that! I'd be more willing to pay a little more and get the previously full sized bag than to get less and pay the same (or more?!). My daughter noticed the same thing when she and her hubby went to their favorite restaurant the other day ... portion sizes much smaller, menu prices higher. What a rip off!

Hi there, The whole idea bothers me, but I don't buy sugar much. I've thought about feeding the hummers here, but prefer to have plants for them. I know that manufacturers do this will all sorts of items-chips, cereal, flour etc etc. Maybe there should be some truthful advertising.

The bad part of this is that it affects some of my recipes....one that uses a cake mix for instance. The weight of those has changed too. blessings, marlene

I've been buying 4 lb bags of sugar now for 2 yrs.

My latest thing I've noticed is my wonderful and thick Bounty paper towels are much thinner than they were just two months ago. SO not happy about that. Still the same size, but thinner. I guess we either are going to continue seeing lesser quality OR lesser quantity at the grocery stores from what I am seeing.

It upsets me too as some recipes rely on certain amounts of product, especially when baking so now it may be necessary to buy a 2nd item in order to keep the size required for a recipe the same so the recipe still works. OR try to rewrite all the recipes which require exact amounts for baking recipes.

They've done it with jars of sauce and cans of nuts. Size shrinks and price remains the same
