Why We Quilt... Another Reason

Yesterday I posted about why we quilt in terms of giving a quilt as a way of welcoming a child. Quilts also connect us, one to another, just as stitches join the layers in the quilt that is our life. This is my friend, one of the B Sisters. Her mother was also my long-time friend and a fellow quilter; when she passed away she left a quilting legacy, as well as a huge stash of fabric. A little over a year ago both of the B sisters and Lady L (the granddaughter of my friend) asked if I could help them to make quilts for themselves using their precious mother's (and grandmother's) fabrics. Once they began it was clear that their first quilts wouldn't be their last. This photo, left, was taken last week when B. came by to show me her finished quilt; she is so proud of her accomplishment, as she should be! She is now connected, in a new way, to her mother through the love of fabric and this quilt; she is connected to her sister and daughter through this mutual, healing, experience of using what was left to them; and, we're all connected to one another through our time together spent sewing, laughing and learning. B. is eager to begin on her next quilt very soon! I completely understand and support that desire... and that connection; after all, it's why we quilt!

B. brought me this handmade gourd birdhouse as a thank you gift! Isn't it wonderful?
I believe the Carolina Wrens will love calling this gourd home~
