Like A Chickadee?

... and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son... " -Luke 3:22

Some of you may remember that we've been involved this year in a church start-up; it's been some of the most joy-filled hard work we've ever done; but, there has been absolutely no doubt whatsoever that we've been Spirit-led every step of the way!  We have certainly been blessed. We are a small church of 34 members. This past Saturday evening we welcomed everyone to our home for a Christmas Open House, hopefully the first of many for Grace Lutheran Church! I had planned, organized, dusted, vacuumed and cooked (and cooked and cooked!) ahead of time in preparation. We eagerly opened the front door to our first guests in the late afternoon, right after I had carefully placed all the food offerings on, and around, the dining room table. Hannes started in barking and carrying on like we'd never seen before. He was dancing on his hind legs in circles on the rug in our foyer, all the while intermittently crying and yelping. Now, if this sort of behavior had gone on where I had just placed the goodies that would have been one thing, but he wasn't there at all, it just didn't make any sense. Mr. Goodneedle quickly scooped him up and banished him to his crate in the back of our home. We would analyze his state of mind later; after our guests departed.  More guests filled our home in the next few minutes; filing in, hanging up their coats and visiting with each other. The fellowship was wonderful. I swiftly stepped to the front door again, in response to the doorbell, just in time to be dive-bombed by... A CHICKADEE! The bird swooped down close to my head after leaving our front hall chandelier, hovered a second and flitted to the top of the grandfather clock! I was dumbfounded. I called to my husband, he grabbed a towel and followed the bird to a silk Ficus tree at the top of the second floor landing. He was unsuccessful in capturing it at that point, our friends continued to arrive, and I decided right then and there to station myself at the entrance to the dining room at avert any aerial assaults around the food stations. For quite some time after that the unwelcome flying guest went missing. My husband put a Christmas movie on for the children to watch in our converted attic space theater room. This is where the bird was located. Two men armed with an extended handle squeegee and a towel managed a humane capture and subsequent release. The party continued without a hitch after that. The next day I noticed "guess who" sitting in the wreath on our front door! The puzzle pieces began to fall together; that poor Chickadee didn't intend to crash our party, when the door opened he startled and took off-- he just happened to be inside at the time! Hannes was not losing his mind, he was trying to tell us that a bird was in the house. Poor pup, wrongfully accused. The bird is still seeking refuge in the wreath, I knock on the door before I cautiously open it now and our fledgling congregation has a great story to tell about our first Christmas party together. Our pastor's wife offered this thought:  "We may have the bird thing all wrong. He may have been the Holy Spirit descending on Grace!" I like that. Yes indeed, this time though that bodily form may have just been a Chickadee.

Art Party!

Lucy Ann chose the theme for her 5th birthday party: ART!  Our daughter took that theme and ran with it. I believe it was everything the birthday girl could have wanted!
The first activity was treat bag decorating.
Picture painting came next... here are two particularly adorable the artists at work.
Our daughter read the party guests an art-related story, it was enjoyed by all. One of Lucy Ann's little friends told Miss Marcia that she reminded her of a teacher! (Once a teacher always a teacher...)
For their sweet treat the budding artists decorated white cupcakes as original, one-of-a-kind, creations!
And a good time was had by all!
I did manage to get a quick snapshot of Lucy Ann in her special dress before the guests arrived. She loved it. Lucy Ann had requested gifts for the Humane Society in lieu of gifts for herself. At the end of the party that green washtub (in the background) was filled with donations for dogs and cats living in the animal shelter until they find their forever homes. We couldn't be prouder of this little girl and her huge heart!

Whipped Cream

What's your most embarrassing moment? I might have just had mine this past Friday evening.  I had organized a small dinner party for a friend who was returning to town for a brief visit after moving away a few years back. Two of her friends in attendance I met for the first time when they walked in the door, there were six of us gathered. We had a lovely time and lingered over dinner, all of us finally adjourning to the kitchen as I sliced up the Chocolate Chess Pie that I had baked for dessert. The refrigerator contained a bowl full of freshly whipped and sweetened cream for dolloping. I opened the door and reached for the bowl... it slipped from my grasp and hit the floor. I doubt that any of you reading this could even begin to imagine the distance or trajectory that whipped cream will travel before depositing itself at its final resting spot(s). It wasn't pretty. I was covered, literally... shoes, legs, skirt hem; the floor was bathed in frothy whiteness as was the wool hooked rug in front of the refrigerator door. I cleaned up the mess as well as I could while urging my guests to carry their now unadorned pie back to the dining room while I attended to the task at hand. Of course they waited for me. I cleaned up as much as I could and hurriedly made the kitchen presentable. Over the weekend the rest of the cleanup occurred: little dots of cream were removed from the pendant lights hanging over the kitchen island, from nearby and not-so-nearby cabinets, from underneath the refrigerator, from inside the refrigerator door, door shelves, door gasket, etc. I'd like to try and forget that this mishap ever happened, especially while attempting to be the perfect hostess... unfortunately those tell-tale sticky specks won't let me, they're mocking me. Looking on the bright side: it could have been worse, it could've been spaghetti sauce!

In The Blink Of An Eye...

...or so it seems, Lynnleigh celebrated her first birthday with a party on Saturday! She was definitely slowing down by the time it came to the cake; all of the family, friends, and presents were a little bit overwhelming. But, after a few preliminary tastes, she caught on quite well!

I just love this picture... my "baby" with his own sweet baby on her birthday.
Here's another favorite... Mr. Goodneedle and Lynnleigh
with her gift from her "PawPaw"; a handmade Maple bookcase.

And last, but certainly not least, the four cousins playing together in Gregory's
bedroom. There was not a single toy that didn't end up somewhere on the floor!
"...and a good time was had by all..."

My daughter-in-law posted this clever side by side on Facebook last week, the caption read as follows:

One baby
One bird
One gown
One year.

Yes, it's true, one year. It still seems like the blink of an eye to Nana!
Happy Birthday, sweet girl~

What A Weekend!

What a weekend! On Thursday of last week our youngest grandchild had his first birthday! Yes, it's true... Gregory turned one. In celebration of his new "big boy" status he went for his first haircut. For the record, I did choke up when I saw him with some of that gorgeous red hair cut off! He doesn't look like a baby anymore. Here they are, the men in my life marking a rite of passage at The Clemmons Barbershop. *sniff*

Quiltkeemosabe and I left for the mountains, and quilt retreat, early on Thursday afternoon. Here we are reminiscing and catching up. There was lots of sewing done too,I offer the photo below as proof.
These three tops were in various stages of togetherness, the borders and necessary piecing were completed and I am happy to report bringing three finished tops home.

Sunday was the big party for the little one. Mommy settled on a polka dot theme and did a superb job of carrying that out, there were DOTS everywhere!

The birthday family...

... and the littlest cake eater. He looks pleased,
life as a one-year-old is sweet.

...and very, very GOOD!
