The Promise

This magnificent Amaryllis has been showing off its glorious, tall, blooming self in our kitchen over the last few days. I had all but given up on it. The bulb, container, and potting medium had been a Christmas gift. I followed the watering and sunlight instructions for the last two and a half months but the shoot crept... ever-so-slowly... up and above the rim of the pot. I wondered, out loud, if the bulb was a dud, it seemed to be taking way too long. When I had all but given up hope Mr. Goodneedle was single-handedly keeping faith. A few weeks ago I noticed that the flower bud appeared to be swelling, a good sign. My own faltering hope was beginning to be kindled, remembrances of blooming bulbs in years-gone-by helped to fan the embers. This is what greeted me the week before last when I returned from a few days away! "See", my husband pointed out, "you just needed to believe that it was going to happen". Today, that second bud is swollen to near-bursting. I can't wait to watch in wonder as it reveals itself; further evidence of the promise that awaits the faithful. During these weeks of Lent, of preparation for what's to come, I'm reminded by this show-off flower of the promise has been there all along; it's as simple as holding on tightly to FAITH!
2 Corinthians 5:7
For we live by faith, not by sight.

Great Expectations!

Easter fills the world with hope and promise. The big (almost) Easter announcement made in our family today has had the same result! (Okay, so it was a Palm Sunday announcement!) Our son and daughter-in-law are expecting in the late fall; we'll be grandparents once again! Hope and promise has never seemed more wonderful.

A Promise

“God never made a promise that was too good to be true.” ~Dwight L. Moody

With a hopeful heart I planted a few daffodil bulbs on a cold autumn afternoon when we moved into our home nine years ago. Today it is simply amazing to see how they have multiplied; large, spreading masses of yellow blossoms brighten up our natural areas, heralding new life and warmer days to come. On Saturday we had a few heavy downpours which succeeded in trampling some of the early blooms down to the ground. I cut the broken stems away from the clumps laden with buds and put the soggy, sorry-looking flowers into a vase overnight, hoping for the best... I wasn't disappointed. And so it is, Spring returns once again, with every hope and promise fulfilled!

Love Is...

Our church is redeveloping their website, it is really shaping up nicely. There are pages for committees and ministries to describe what's going on within the life of our congregation. We have a "Wedding Committee", they have chosen to use this photograph for their page; for a very special reason. As youngsters this couple met at Sunday School and grew up within our congregation, their families knew each other; they dated throughout high school and graduated. They went their separate ways. Seven years later fate brought them back together, at, where else? At church. They fell in love again, as adults, dated for three years and married in June of 2004.

This picture-perfect couple is my daughter and son-in-law.

Their relationship hasn't always been picture-perfect, not at all. They have seen tragedy and heartbreak up close and personal, more than any young couple should; and yet, I have witnessed a forging of their love through it all. They handle life and all of it's joys and sorrows with grace and dignity and LOVE. I am so very proud of them. They represent love and committment and a Christian life, living out God's promise day to day.

And so, as we step into Valentine's week, let's and celebrate love and all that it represents.
Happy Valentine's Day!
